Announcements

  • Pi Day is a celebration of student work! One of the novel things you learned in our stats class is how to use R in statistics. Since no other instructors are teaching their students how to use R, you are all unique :-)
  • Click here for some past posters.
  • I would like to invite all of you to work on a presentation to showcase your knowledge of R to other students. I want this to be collaborative (ideally 3 or 4 students, plus myself) would be perfect. We can simply make a poster project detailing why students should learn R and show some of the data analysis we generated in our labs, so hopefully not too much effort. Or, if the group is more ambitious we can study a more detailed data set and present our analysis. As I will be part of the group, I will help out with all the R code.
  • If you are interested, please email me.
  • Final Exam Study Guide
  • Important! There's no review material in the Final Exam study guide and there will be no formula sheet provided on the Final Exam. Why? Because you get to bring your own cheat sheet!
  • Warning! Read the instructions carefully for your cheat sheet. I collect them before the test and inspect them carefully before allowing you to use it.
  • Exam 4 Study Guide
  • Important! There's no review material in the Exam 4 study guide and there will be no formula sheet provided on Exam 4. Why? Because you get to bring your own cheat sheet!
  • Warning! Read the instructions carefully for your cheat sheet. I collect them before the test and inspect them carefully before allowing you to use it.
  • Chapter 7 and 8.1 filled classnotes now available. Also, solutions to Quiz 6 now available.
  • Reminder: the class voted that Exam 3 be take FRIDAY!!!!!
  • Exam 2 Study Guide
  • Chapter 4 and 5 notes are also posted. See the calendar for links to them.
  • Data Sets from Textbook
  • Download the necessary data sets from the textbook to do some of the homework problems.
  • I recommend you download the "Excel" files. If you don't have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, I recommend you upload them to a google drive folder and use Google's "Sheets".
  • I've posted a few documents to help you study and prepare for Exam 1 on Monday.
  • I've posted the solutions to Quiz 1 and 2. You will find this above under the Exam Preparation materials.
  • I've posted a document titled "Exam 1 Study Guide and Review". You will find this above under the Exam Preparation materials. It is from last semester I taught stats so it needs to be updated, which I will repost by tomorrow sometime. Stay tuned!
  • I created an OPTIONAL online homework course to accompany our textbook.
  • Go to MyStatsLab and follow these instructions to enroll. Use our COURSE ID: basilio70884.
  • NOTE: I encourage everyone to enroll immediately, since you get to try the system for FREE for the first two weeks.

  • One of my favorite videos! Enjoy!
Welcome everyone to Elementary Statistics!
I'm excited to begin the new semester and to meet all of you. I'll post important information here.
I posted the course syllabus below--for students who have not taken a course with me please read it carefully.
More info coming soon...

Rent your Calc

You are required to have a TI-84 graphing calculator for the semester, and can borrow one for FREE by completing this google form (do this ASAP)

https://goo.gl/forms/dr1bJfdYkeHmz4302

When a student completes this google form, once the spring semester starts they can go to the library to pick up a calculator. Calculators will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. However, please note that because the graphing calculators are also being used this winter intersession, students wanting to borrow a calculator for the spring semester will NOT be able to pick up a calculator until the first day of the spring semester.

Handouts

  • Data Sets from Textbook

Course Policies

Please consult the Course Syllabus for a more detailed description.
Analysis of data relative to social and natural processes. Collecting, grouping and presenting numerical data by means of: frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and deviation, probability and sampling, measures of prediction and correlation, linear regression, hypothesis testing, including analysis of variance.
A minimum of C in Math 131 or 133B or 134B or 141 or 150 or placement based on the Math assessment process.
  • There is no numeric value given to the homework.
  • A homework list is provided on our course website, organized into section covered for each exam, and is due on the day of each exam!
  • I normally do not entertain homework questions during the regular lectures — that's what office hours are for!
  • You are expected to attempt (and hopefully complete) at least 70% of the problems in each section that is assigned for that exam.
  • If I do not receive your homework on-time (or if less than 70% complete), your score for that exam will be recorded as zero.
  • If you cannot make it to class (e.g. extreme emergency), homework must be arranged to be dropped off on or before the test day either by another classmate who will bring it to class, or by someone else that may drop if off at the math department office during their regular hours (but before our class begins).
  • Your active participation in this course is essential to your development in mathematical and statistical thinking. You and your classmates will learn from eachother just as much as your learn from me.
  • The In-class Assignments ARE part of your grade and will be scored.
  • Notes for the sections that will on the exam are due on the day of each exam!
  • If I do not receive your ICAs on-time (i.e. before the exam begins), your score for that exam will be recorded as zero.
  • 1” Binder One binder (with pockets) for lecture notes, ICAs, a folder for quizzes and exams, and blank paper for homework.
  • Textbook The textbook is Elementary Statistics, 13th Ed., by Mario Triola. We will cover most of the material in Chapters 1 –12. You should read the relevant section of the text before we cover the material in class, and then again while doing the homework. Please consult the following documents from my website: Homework list.
  • Graphing calculator This is required and a TI-84 or TI-84 Plus (plus is preferred). PCC has a program where we are lending calculators to Statistics students for free. Fill out the form here. When a student completes this google form, once the spring semester starts they can go to the Shatford library to pick up a calculator. Calculators will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. However, please note that because the graphing calculators are also being used this winter intersession, students wanting to borrow a calculator for the spring semester will NOT be able to pick up a calculator until the first day of the spring semester.

Additional Resources

Additional Textbooks
  • OpenStax Introductory Statistics book. Free and online. I recommend the PDF version instead of the web-browser based version.
  • OpenIntro Statistics book. The name is very similar to the book above but they are different. This one is nice since it also has labs using R. A great resources if you want more R help.
  • Statistics Using Technology by Katheryn Kozak. Free and online. The notes are simple and to the point. Excellent for extra examples.
  • Online Stats book. Free and online. We will use some of the simulations to help us study and visualize data.

Grading

The grade will be based on the following:
In-Class Assignments (ICAs) 5%
Quizzes 10%
Labs 10%
Exams (4 exams @ 12.5% or 5 exams @ 10%) 50%
Final Exam 25%
The grades earned will be based on the following:
A 90% \(\le\) Your percentage
B 80% \(\le\) Your percentage \(<\) 90%
C 70% \(\le\) Your percentage \(<\) 80%
D 60% \(\le\) Your percentage \(<\) 70%
F Your percentage \(<\) 60%
